WHAT IS A FULL SPECTRUM INFRARED SAUNA?

A full spectrum infrared sauna offers the entire infrared wavelength spectrum. It includes far, mid and near infrared, and it’s worth noting that not all infrared saunas include all three. More commonly, you’ll see most infrared saunas labelled as ‘far infrared saunas’, meaning you’re only getting far infrared in your sessions. But with a full spectrum sauna, the three types of infrared wavelengths come with varying benefits.

Near infrared wavelengths are absorbed just below the skin. Meaning, near infrared may be particularly good for:

  • Skin/wound healing
  • Decreasing the appearance of wrinkles
  • Decreasing skin inflammation
  • Rejuvenating the skin

Mid infrared penetrates slightly deeper and may offer benefits such as:

  • Improved healing (not just superficial)
  • Decreasing deeper inflammation
  • Improving pain

Far infrared wavelengths may help to:

  • Detoxify the entire body
  • Promote weight loss
  • Increase your heart rate
  • Potentially boost your metabolism as well

These wavelengths complement each other, so when you have a full spectrum infrared sauna, you can reap all the benefits associated with every level of infrared. In summary, you will have optimal therapeutic benefits during your infrared sauna sessions.

WHAT IS CHROMOTHERAPY?

Chromotherapy, also called colour light therapy, is the process of restoring balance to the body by applying colour. Many people use chromotherapy lights in an infrared sauna to achieve the wellness benefits of colour light therapy.

Chromotherapy uses colours to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in health and harmony. Each colour possesses frequencies of a specific vibration, and each vibration is related to different physical symptoms.

Colour and light have been utilized by healers for thousands of years. Colour therapy possibly has roots in Indian medicine (Ayurveda), ancient Egyptian culture and traditional Chinese healing.

A GOOD SWEAT

OVERALL WELLNESS

Infrared heat can greatly benefit sore, damaged, or tired muscles. The heat penetrates the muscles, increasing blood circulation and assisting with muscle repair. Infrared heat will also help in the reduction of lactic acids, allowing tight and worn-out muscles to relax and rejuvenate

DETOXIFICATION

Infrared saunas detoxify seven times more than traditional saunas---releasing your body of harmful toxins that impede regular functions.

WEIGHT LOSS

Studies have shown that an infrared sauna session can burn upwards of 600 calories while you relax.

SKIN HEALTH

Infrared sauna use increases circulation which revitalises the skin, helps reduce pores, and stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone throughout the body.

REVIVE

Infrared waves penetrate tissues, joints and muscles to relieve aches and pains stemming from overuse, strain or repetitive motion.

RELAXATION

Infrared saunas decrease cortisol and increase serotonin. During a session, your body’s muscles are warmed by infrared heat. This helps to release the stress and fatigue brought on by muscle tension.

FAQ's

TRADITIONAL SAUNA VS INFRARED SAUNA?

Compared to a traditional sauna where the heat is quite humid and your body is encouraged to sweat through the build-up of steam and hot air. An infrared sauna is much drier so you can typically last longer than you normally would.

Instead of heating the air around you like a traditional sauna, an infrared sauna uses infrared heat lamps where light is transmitted to penetrate deep below the skin’s surface.

This directly raises your core temperature, stimulating your body's metabolic response to eliminate the build-up of toxins found deeper within the body. Evoking more profound detoxification.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN INFRARED SAUNA?

Because infrared saunas are so effective in detoxifying the body, comes with it are a whole range of complimentary benefits as well, from:

• better sleep

• relaxation

• detoxification

• weight loss

• relief from muscle soreness & joint pain

• clear and tighter skin

• improved circulation

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU USE AN INFRARED SAUNA?

This is completely up to the individual. Depending on your level of activity and the benefits you’re looking to achieve, a single session every couple of weeks might be enough, others may want to include it in their weekly routine.

Typically speaking, a regular 45-minute session, at least 2-3 days apart will yield best results.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR A SESSION?

Make sure you’re well-hydrated, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and too much caffeine. It’s recommended you try and drink at least 1 litre more than you normally would on any given day. You’re going to sweat a lot so hydration is key. At Sweat Spa we offer water during a session. You may want to bring along your own, even just for after your appointment so that you can easily continue your hydration.

WHAT DO I WEAR IN AN INFRARED SAUNA?

As little as possible. Some like to wear swimmers, others like to go naked but it’s completely up to you. You may wish to bring a spare set of clothes to change into.

HOW MANY CALORIES DO YOU BURN IN ONE SESSION?

Get ready for something that will blow your mind! You can burn upwards of 600 calories in just one 30-minute sweat session. Yes, you read that right. You can burn up to 600 calories just by relaxing.

WHY AM I NOT SWEATING MUCH?

When you see people coming out of most saunas, you see them drenched in sweat, looking like they just finished doing an intense workout. However, when you go into an infrared sauna, you expect the same results but are surprised if you don’t come out looking the same. You may be wondering why this is and if it’s okay.

Some people sweat in an infrared sauna while others don’t and both are entirely normal. If you don’t sweat during your time in the sauna, feel your skin once you get out. Do you feel a little damp or slightly sticky? These are the toxins being released from your body. You do not have to look like you’ve just run a mile to reap the benefits.

WHAT DO I DO DURING A SESSION?

Well, that’s entirely up to you! You can simply just sit and relax. Take the rare opportunity to leave the phone aside and switch off. Stream your favourite music or podcast via the Bluetooth speaker. You can meditate or practice deep breathing (we can recommend some great online guided meditations). You can do some stretching while your muscles are nice and warm. You can read one of our books or have a go at the Rubik’s cube or another puzzle. Whatever you need to do to relax.

WHAT IF I FEEL TOO HOT?

The ideal temperature for an infrared sauna will depend on your preferences and what is most comfortable for you. However, we do set our sauna temperature around 45°C - 55°C with a session duration of approximately 30-45 minutes. It will take a little of time to gradually reach these temps so may you may not even notice the increase straight away. If you feel that you are getting too uncomfortable, you can absolutely open the door for a bit or hop out for a bit also. Yes, you want to get a good sweat going but not push yourself too far past your comfort zone. Listen to what your body is telling you.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER A SESSION?

You need to rehydrate immediately following your session. You would have experienced an intense period of dehydration so it’s important you let your body cool down and drink some water. Avoid showering at least 30 min after your sauna to experience the full benefit of the detoxification. At Sweat Spa, we provide a cool towel to wipe down with after your sauna to refresh your skin and to remove toxins so your body doesn’t reabsorb while you’re cooling down.

Some might continue sweating post-session - this is normal and it’s just your body cooling down. Because of this, we recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes and avoid scheduling any intense activity following your session. Give your body some time to relax.

sauna etiquette

  • Please ensure you have completed your client intake form before your appointment. Leaving this for the start of your appointment will take up your precious relaxation time.
  • If you are running late, we will try to accomodate you with a shorter session but this may not be possible. Please let us know if you will be late.
  • Please come in without makeup and lotions on your skin. We have makeup remover wipes available for use. Clean skin ensures that you are not letting any toxins in while you are sweating toxins out. If you have recently had a spray tan or applied self-tanner, it is best to postpone your sauna session
  • During your session, please leave the towel on the seat and the mat on the floor. This will keep our sauna nice for everyone's use.
  • Please pop all your used towels/mat/hair wrap in the basket provided at the end of your session.
  • While sauna therapy is considered safe, it is not for everyone. We want you to have a safe and enjoyable sweat, so let us know about your past sauna experiences or any health conditions you may have. Please remember we are not medical professionals and always recommend checking with your primary physician if you have any questions or concerns regarding infrared sauna use.
  • Minimum age for a sauna session is 18 years.
